Royal College Main Building (774 Echo Drive) closed June 13 & 14

Our Main building (774 Echo) experienced a small fire on Friday, June 10 at around 9 p.m. ET, which caused some limited damage. The fire, which originated behind the Council room, was quickly extinguished by our sprinkler system. Ottawa Fire Services also came to investigate.

We are very grateful that no one was onsite when the fire broke out, and that no one was hurt or injured.

The damage is limited to some areas on the 2nd floor, as well as some parts of the 1st floor (including the Service Desk area) and basement below the Council room that experienced water damage from the sprinkler system. Crews from a restoration service are currently onsite drying the facility and cleaning the impacted areas and surfaces.

Due to the cleanup underway and the additional noise and traffic, we are encouraging all staff who normally would work in the Main building to work remotely on Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14.

Additionally, meeting spaces on the 1st and 2nd floors will not be available for use for the foreseeable future.

Here are some more details around building access:

  • Although we are encouraging staff to not access the Main building, if you have left any items on the 3rd, 4th or 5th floors, your employee pass will still work and enable you to go to those areas
  • If you need to access files or equipment on the 1st or 2nd floors tomorrow or Tuesday, please go to Reception for support
  • The Annex remains open; however, there are limited additional workspaces available right now as the Exams team is using some of this space for our examinations this coming week and not all spaces are equipped with docking stations and monitors

An email to all staff will be circulated late afternoon on Monday, June 13, after we receive an update on the state of the cleanup. Please keep your eyes out for the next update that will be sent by Communications. The information will also be published on the Intranet, as well as on this site.

We will also have more information shortly for meeting organizers who were seeking to use the meeting rooms on the 2nd or 1st floors.  We are aware of the meetings that were previously booked and we will work to ensure these meetings can be facilitated in a safe and convenient fashion.

Thank you to our colleagues in CSFM and ITS who came onsite this weekend to support cleanup efforts, as well as to all of the Crisis Management Team and colleagues from across the Royal College who are engaged in bringing the basement, 1st and 2nd floors back online as soon as possible.
